Robert
H. Rimmer deserves to have a library page all his own.
Robert Rimmer did, after all, write a lot of
books and tell a lot of people his thoughts about love, romance, and being
human beings —Bob Rimmer had no secrets. He stood his ground in the face of
farcical responses from a lot of old fartsicals. I regard him, while he
lived, to have been a true, honest American of the kind we all should strive
to be. If Robert Rimmer's work benefited you in some manner, he deserves
your testimonial (be sure to see how below).
I
have reached an age where my own sexual interest has begun to wane. My
relationship with Mama-Lou is strictly monogamous. That's the agreement we
began with, and we have maintained it by nurturing our love for each other
over the decades of our marriage. It has occurred to me, however, that
where it is relatively easy for a large man to squelch a small woman's
advances, he might not have so easy of a time with multiple women demanding
his attentions, so they each might get more actual affection than a
monogamous woman.
I
don't know of any country in the world where men and women are completely
free to choose the methods and nature of their relationships. The recent
problems with Muslim nations has caused us to notice their polygamous ways.
We tend to poke fun at them for such things, but I have begun to wonder: In
a completely natural setting, with no artificial laws imposed upon them,
would more women choose multiple partners, or more men? Does anybody really
know, or do we have to resort to religion-influenced guessing and
suppositions?
I
have devoted this page to display Bob Rimmer's works. He dealt with human
relationships in the large quantity of dedicated work he produced over his
lifetime. All of the graphics are linked to the represented book on
amazon.com, where you can check for availability and make a purchase. The
books are arranged in a somewhat alphabetical, rather than chronological
order. If I've missed one, let me know and it will appear here if I can find
it.
For
those interested in this subject matter, I would also recommend my own

which has a section about the esoteric side of multiple-partner
relationships, and The Other Way
my newest novel. What you'll find there might very well surprise you.
Those who feel such relationships should be prevented will feel dismayed.
And, my story about Time Loop offers a
short scenario about such a kind of future, wherein things are almost
backward from the way they now are. It is not inconceivable, the way things
go, for that to happen. Robert did, by the way, a kind of a poet himself,
write the foreword for my own
Daemonic Poetry, in which I demonstrate for the secular side
of myself that romance, warmth and absence of religion can walk in this
world hand-in-hand.
But, this page is not about me.

ideas were not frivolous, nor lacking in virtue, as some would have you to
think. They were practical applications of a vision of which he had gotten a
sense. His dream was of a world with a less disheartening effect upon its
inhabitants than that one he shared with us while he lived, a world where
each of us could have fun making a positive contribution. His website,

Robert seemed to me to be a provocative, evocative man. Anyone who disliked
him probably normally dined on raw vinegar and lemons. I found him charming
to talk with on the phone and via eMail, and cannot recall a sour word about
anybody except, possibly, Leonard Peikoff for threatening him with a
lawsuit.
Robert's free spirit and freedom-inspired thoughts exemplified American
ideals in the best kind of way, in spite of American practices. He lived
freedom as much as advocated it; not as a politician, but as a practical
matter of advancing and enjoying a happier existence for himself and all
others with whom he came in contact.
I
feel certain The Force (as I expound it in my own work) stayed with him, and
now goes on because he helped compel it to do so.

That
Robert H. Rimmer wrote a bunch of books to draw our attention to disparities
between our modern claims to personal freedom and the real thing is great.
What would be greater, would be that we cared enough about our own selves,
and felt brave enough to show it, to investigate their content and make up
our minds whether it applies in some useful manner that we may not have,
somehow, noticed.
We never
are trained to be scientists, however, but are trained instead to think as
in a religion, that if an idea does not meet our preconceptions it has to be
wrong no matter how true is is, and we throw it away. We play
follow-the-leader and scoff instead to our own potential detriment, without
truly understanding what we're scoffing at. Our leaders appear to be
those with venomous tongues whose game seems to be to discover how to lure
the grandest number of sheep into their dens and fleece them. The winners
seem to be those with the guile to disclaim what's healthy as perverted, and
that which reeks of perversion as good for us all.
What is
perverted is that most of our lives are lived out in unnatural ways, most of
our moral ideas are unnatural, and that most of our doctrinal ideals pit us
against nature in unnatural ways by causing us to think of it as dirty,
unfit, twisted, snarled, knotted, tangled, crude, raw and, with the other
fork of their tongues, would have us believe it is God's perfect creation.
If God loved it, why should we not?
It
doesn't follow, and even those who accept it all wholeheartedly claim they
don't expect any of it to make sense. Fine for them, maybe; for me, it makes
a great source of hard to swallow material to write about, and to set forth
easily found, more palatable alternatives.
What is
hard to set forth, is reasons for change to be necessary. Robert's writing
influenced much of my own, and crafted a picture I defend in my own book,
The Complete Universe of Memes, which presents the idea of Memetics not
in a negative-only light as is usual, but sets forth alternative sides to
the idea of memes by presenting it as a tool Evolution has given humanity,
if we are wise enough, to enable us to achieve the next steps in Nature's
design.
Memes
are opposing ideas that seem to compete with each other to try to get us to
copy and adopt them. The memes inherent to Robert's view of the world
compete with memes that most of us already uphold. The sheer force of
numbers makes it hard for new ideas to become well enough known to stand
much of a chance in that scenario, unless they are so outlandish or
laughable that people begin to talk about them. More weird ideas of that
sort will get adopted than sensible ones like Robert's, for that reason
alone: Publicity.
People
need to get brave enough to start talking about these supposedly taboo
subjects. Will we ever dare to ask such questions as, "Why is that wrong?
Has anybody ever tried it out to see what happens, and proved it to be
wrong?" Will we ever dare to confront our so-called 'leaders' to demand
answers to such questions?
I hope
so. I hope it doesn't take all of us the half century I have spent pursuing
my interest in the relationships and disputes between science and religion,
and the disparities both have presented us regarding life and existence, and
whatever reasons there might be for both. The alternative is for us to
simply die out and be replaced like those whom we replaced. Do we want that?
